Establishing active travel and lighting data

One of our research goals is to investigate the potential impact road lighting has on active travel. We know from previous research that darkness significantly reduces the number of people walking and cycling, even when factors not related to light conditions are accounted for. We also know that darkness increases the risk of involvement in a collision for active travellers, for example at pedestrian crossings. We do not currently know how lighting may help address these negative impacts of darkness however.

To answer this question, we need detailed and reliable data about active travellers, road lighting, and road safety. We are in the process of gathering potential data sources for different areas, that will allow us to answer questions about the role lighting can have in encouraging active travel after-dark and making it safer.

The table below outlines sources of data we have established so far or are currently exploring. If you know of other sources of data or areas that could provide this type of information, please get in touch at j.uttley@sheffield.ac.uk or steve.fotios@sheffield.ac.uk.
